ECNL Director highlights importance of civil society & steps to enhance freedoms at OSCE ODIHR HDIM 17/10/2014

ECNL Executive Director, Mrs. Katerina Hadzi-Miceva Evans was invited to deliver an introductory speech at the 2014 Human Dimension Implementation Meeting (HDIM), Europe\'s largest annual human rights and democracy conference which is organized every year by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).

As an introducer of the 3rd working session on freedom of peaceful assembly and association on 23rd September 2014 she was talking about the importance of civil society, trend of increasing restrictions on civil society on national level all over the word and outlined examples how the enjoyment of the freedoms of association and assembly can be enhanced.

Civil Society Organization Sustainability Index (CSOSI) for 2013 Released 30/09/2014

USAID has recently published the 17th edition of the CSO Sustainability Index for Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia. The index has been used since 1997 to assess the sustainability of the CSO sector and is now covering over 60 countries in different regions around the world. By using standard indicators and collecting data each year, the CSOSI enables users to track developments and identify trends in the CSO sector over time while allowing for cross-country and cross-region comparison.

ECNL’s paper on approaches in regulation of volunteering 15/09/2014

At request of the Legal Transformation Center and Assembly of Pro-Democratic NGOs of Belarus, ECNL prepared an overview of European practices in regulation of volunteering.

Among other speakers, Katerina Hadzi-Miceva Evans, Executive Director of ECNL is also quoted. She was talking about the authorities’ phobia toward public gatherings which results in shrinking space for civic action. She explained that the trend of increasing restrictions sets challenges not only in developing countries but in developed democratic countries as well. She highlighted the importance of overcoming administrative obstacles in order to protect freedom of assembly.

ECNL co-organizes the first regional conference on Freedom of Assembly (24-24 Aug 2014, Skopje, MK) 27/08/2014

The first-ever regional and national event on freedom of assembly titled: Safeguarding the Space for Peaceful Assembly in South-East Europe will take place on 25 – 26 August 2014 in Skopje. The conference will bring together national representatives from civil society organizations from the Balkan countries, EU representatives, OSCE/OIDHR experts, and public authorities to explore and discuss opportunities and strengths related to the legal and practical aspects of the enforcement of the freedom of assembly in SEE.

ECNL contributes to development of EU Country Roadmaps 20/08/2014

In June 2014, more than 40 EU staff from Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific met in Brussels last month to exchange ideas on how best to prepare their first \"EU Country Roadmap for Engagement with Civil Society\", due by the end of July 2014. The Executive Director of ECNL delivered a session about the enabling environment which is a key component of the roadmaps, and in an interview highlighted key aspects of enabling environment and main challenges.
